Keyboard Technologies, Inc. was founded by educators in 1998.
We created this company with the goal of providing simple,
low-cost skill building technology for 2nd–10th grade students.
Technology, both hardware and software,
poured into schools throughout the 80’s and 90’s and while
much of the technology was fascinating and fun, most teachers
and parents saw little direct academic payoff. We found
(as did most teachers) that 1, 2 or even 5 computers
did not provide the daily and ongoing access necessary for
skill development. Furthermore, we found that while desktop
and laptop computers were appropriate for adults and high
school students, they were too complex, too packed with distractions
and too problematic to be naturally integrated into the classroom.
The classroom is a challenging enough environment. Adding
logistic and technical hurdles to the classroom is not something
teachers welcome.
It was during the 90’s that some
low-cost technology alternatives began arriving in schools.
These were battery-powered keyboards that offered portable
word processing capabilities. Iin most cases these portable
keyboards were clumsy and sometimes crude, but they did reveal
just how critical daily, whole-class access was in the development
of skills.
After using a number of these portable word processors for
years, we felt that much more could be offered to students
and teachers. We felt that we, as educators, could design a more effective,
more focused learning tool.
The Writer is so much more than a simple text entry device - it is an instructional tool that assists teachers and
students in achieving important instructional goals. It is
the first portable keyboard designed from the ground up by educators.
